This also catches something most mouse testers don't: a worn switch firing two clicks from one press. If that happens while you're clicking around, you'll see a warning — that's a hardware defect, not something you did. Double-click twice on purpose with the Left button and you'll also see the gap between your clicks and whether it's fast enough to register as a real double-click.

Yes — a trackpad's tap-to-click and two-finger scroll fire the same browser events a mouse click and scroll wheel do, so the button test, scroll test, cursor tracking, and drag test all work the same way. Browsers can't reliably tell a trackpad apart from a mouse, and most multi-finger gestures (three/four-finger swipes) aren't exposed to web pages at all — Safari is a partial exception, with its own non-standard pinch-gesture events — so full gesture testing isn't something this tool covers.
They're in the same test box as the main three — labeled Back and Forward. If your mouse has them but they don't light up here, they may need vendor software installed before the OS recognizes them as mouse buttons at all.
That's how browsers number mouse buttons internally: 0=Left, 1=Middle, 2=Right, 3=Back, 4=Forward. This tool shows you the live number next to whichever button you last pressed, which is exactly what a web page sees.
Two systems are both common, and they only partly agree. Browsers (and this tool) number by a fixed internal list: 0=Left, 1=Middle, 2=Right, 3=Back, 4=Forward. Mouse driver software and many games instead number in click order: 1=Left, 2=Right, 3=Middle, 4=Back, 5=Forward. Both agree that Right is "button 2" — but they disagree on Middle and the side buttons, which is where most of the confusion comes from.

No — browsers can't read a mouse's raw USB polling rate or true DPI at all; they only see the movement and click events the OS already translated. Any "polling rate test" done in a browser is really timing JavaScript events, which reads meaningfully lower than the real hardware rate. Cursor tracking is the closest honest alternative — it shows tracking smoothness, not a fabricated Hz or DPI number.
It draws a line following your cursor as you move it. A smooth, unbroken line means your mouse or trackpad is tracking cleanly; visible gaps or sudden jumps can point at a sensor or surface problem.
Click and hold, then drag across the box — a live selection rectangle follows your cursor, and the button should stay registered as held the whole time. If the drag stutters, jumps, or the button seems to release on its own mid-drag, that points at a tracking or switch problem specifically during sustained movement, which the basic button test (press-and-release only) and cursor tracking (movement without a held button) can each miss on their own.
Button and scroll testing need a real mouse or trackpad — a touchscreen tap doesn't distinguish left/right/middle the way a mouse does. The site itself works on mobile, but this specific tool is built for a device with an actual pointing device attached.
Most mouse switches are rated by their manufacturer for somewhere between 10 and 50 million clicks, though real-world lifespan varies a lot with click force and build quality. That's roughly why older mice start double-clicking on their own — the switch is wearing out, not you clicking wrong — so the chatter detector above is the practical way to check if yours has already reached that point, rather than trying to count total lifetime clicks.
