Drop the video on the page or click to browse. MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI and WMV all work.
Choose the new type
Pick MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI or WMV. The page looks inside the video and says whether it can simply be copied into that type or has to be made again.
Convert
A copy happens in your browser in seconds. A video that has to be made again goes to ToolStudio's server, where you can choose the quality.
Download
The new video appears with a player and a Download button.
Add a video, choose the type you want and convert. Before anything runs, the page looks inside the video and tells you how the conversion will go.
A video file is a box (MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI or WMV) holding a picture and sound packed with codecs such as H.264 and AAC. When the new box can hold the same packing, the streams are simply copied into it: that is instant, it happens in your browser, nothing is uploaded and nothing is lost. When it can't (an H.264 picture into a WebM, a VP8 picture into an MP4, nearly anything into a WMV), the video has to be made again, which takes ToolStudio's server; the page names the reason and lets you choose the quality first.
A copy changes nothing. When a video is made again, Balanced and Best quality lose very little and Smaller file gives up more to save space. AVI files come out bigger than MP4 because the format is less efficient.
A copy happens in your browser, and the video never leaves your device. A video that has to be made again is uploaded to the server and deleted automatically afterwards. Videos up to 150 MB can be copied and up to 100 MB can be made again. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on how many videos you convert.
Add the video, leave MP4 chosen under Convert to and press Convert to MP4. The page first looks inside the video and tells you whether it can be copied into an MP4 as it is, which is instant and happens in your browser, or has to be made again, which uses ToolStudio's server.
Choose the type you want: MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI or WMV. The video keeps its picture and sound when the new type can hold them, and is made again in the new type when it can't.
iPhone videos are MOV files, and their picture (H.264, or HEVC if High Efficiency is on) and sound can go into an MP4 as they are, so the conversion is instant. HEVC plays on Apple devices and many newer ones but not everywhere; tick Make the picture H.264 if it must play on any player.
MP4 is accepted by more players, websites and phones than MOV, which is Apple's type, so convert when a site or a device does not take your MOV. If you only edit on a Mac, there is no need.
Yes. A WebM from a Chrome screen recording (VP9 picture and Opus sound) can be copied into an MP4 in your browser as it is. An older WebM with a VP8 picture or Vorbis sound has to be made again, which takes the server.
When the MKV holds an H.264 or HEVC picture and AAC, MP3 or similar sound, it is copied into the MP4 with nothing made again, so quality is untouched. The page tells you before you start whether yours qualifies. An MKV's subtitle tracks are not kept in an MP4.
Copying the streams into a new type loses nothing, and that is what happens whenever the new type can hold them. When the video has to be made again, there is a small loss at the Balanced and Best quality settings; Smaller file gives up more to save space.
When the new type cannot hold its picture or sound as they are: a VP8 or H.264 picture into a WebM, a WebM's VP8 into an MP4, almost anything into a WMV. The page names the reason before you start.
It makes the picture H.264 even when the new type could hold the video's own, so the file plays on almost any player. It is offered for MP4, MOV and MKV when the picture is something else, such as HEVC, VP9 or AV1, and it takes the server.
Yes. An MP4's H.264 picture is made again as MPEG-4 with MP3 sound, which old players and editors understand. AVI files come out bigger than the MP4, because the format is less efficient.
Yes. The picture and sound are made again as WMV2 and WMA, the kind of file old Windows programs open. Newer video should stay MP4 unless a program requires WMV.
MP4 is the most widely accepted type; WebM is made for web pages and its VP8 or VP9 pictures often give smaller files for the same look, but some phones and editors will not open it. Neither is better for everything: use MP4 to share, WebM for a page.
The file type (MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, WMV) is the box; the codecs (H.264, VP9, AAC and so on) are how the picture and sound inside it are packed. Changing the box is instant when the new box can hold the same packing.
MKV keeps a video's subtitle tracks. The other types here do not, so a subtitle track is left out when converting to them.
Every sound track is kept, with its language. A track the new type cannot hold is made again along with the others.
Not when it can be copied: that happens in your browser and the video never leaves your device. When it has to be made again the video is uploaded to ToolStudio's server and deleted automatically afterwards; the page says so before you start.
Up to 150 MB when it is copied in your browser, and up to 100 MB when it is made again on the server.
A copy takes a few seconds: in testing, a 14 MB 30-second video became an MKV in about two to three seconds. Making it again takes about a second of waiting per second of 720p video for MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM, and about three seconds per second of 1080p; AVI and WMV are quicker. The server refuses a video that would take too long, roughly over three and a half minutes of 720p.

Add the video as a file from your device. A web page cannot read a video that sits on another site, so for an online video, use the original file.
Convert it here, then use Compress Video to make the file smaller.
