Choose what to make
A thumbnail of one moment, or a contact sheet: a grid of pictures from the whole video.
Set it up
For a thumbnail, pick the moment and the size. For a sheet, choose the columns and rows, the colours and whether to show the times.
Make it and download
The picture appears with a Download button. Save it as a JPG or a PNG.
Add a video and make a picture from it: a thumbnail of one moment, or a contact sheet of the whole video. The picture appears with a download button, and nothing is uploaded.
Pick the moment by moving the player, stepping one frame at a time or typing a time such as 1:05.5. Then choose the size: the video's own, YouTube (1280 × 720), a link preview (1200 × 630), square (1080 × 1080) or Reels and Stories (1080 × 1920). If the video is a different shape from the size, Fill the shape crops the edges so the picture covers it, and Show all of it keeps the whole picture with black bars.
A contact sheet is one picture of many small ones from a video in a grid, each with its time, under the video's name, length, picture size and file size. Choose 2 to 8 pictures across and 1 to 12 rows, a dark or light background and a width of 1200, 1600 or 2400 pixels. The pictures are taken evenly through the video, from the middle of equal slices, so the first and last are not the black frames at the ends.
YouTube asks for 1280 × 720 (16:9), at least 640 pixels wide and under 2 MB, and JPG is the safest type for staying under that. Apps change what they want, so check the size the one you use asks for.
Your browser's own decoder takes the pictures when it can play the video; when it can't, as with AVI or WMV, the page uses the media engine instead. A video with few keyframes takes longer for each picture, because every jump decodes forward from the nearest one.
Your browser makes the picture on your own phone or computer. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on how many thumbnails and sheets you make.
Add the video, choose A thumbnail, move the player to the moment you like (or type a time such as 1:05.5), pick a size and press Make the thumbnail. The picture appears with a Download button.
Choose the size YouTube, 1280 × 720, find the frame you want and make the thumbnail. That is the 16:9 shape YouTube shows, and it is saved as a JPG by default, which keeps the file small.
Sources agree on 1280 × 720 pixels (16:9), at least 640 pixels wide, and under 2 MB. JPG is the safest type for staying under the size limit, because a PNG of the same picture is usually much larger.
Fill the shape crops the edges so the picture covers the whole thumbnail, and Show all of it keeps the whole picture and adds black bars at the sides or top and bottom. A 16:9 video made into a 1280 × 720 thumbnail needs neither.
Pause the player and use Frame back and Frame forward to step one frame at a time, or type the time. The box shows the time to a hundredth of a second, and the thumbnail is made from that frame.
These are upright, 9:16, usually 1080 × 1920 pixels, which is the size Reels and Stories on the list makes. Check the size the app asks for, because apps change their advice.
Yes. Choose Square, 1080 × 1080: Fill the shape crops a wide video to its middle, and Show all of it keeps the whole picture with bars above and below.
A link preview, 1200 × 630, is a wide picture that many sites show when a link is shared. Choose it when the thumbnail is going on a web page or in a post that links to the video.
Yes. Original size makes the thumbnail exactly as big as the video's picture, so a 4K video gives a 4K picture.
A contact sheet is one picture made of many small pictures from a video, arranged in a grid with each one's time, so that you can see the whole video at a glance. Photographers used the name for a sheet of small prints.
Choose A contact sheet, set how many pictures across and how many rows, and press Make the contact sheet. The pictures are taken evenly through the video and put in a grid under the video's name and details.
From 2 across and 1 row up to 8 across and 12 rows, which is 96 pictures. The page shows the total as you move the sliders.
Yes. Show the time on each picture is ticked by default and writes the time in a corner of every picture; untick it for plain pictures.
Yes: a dark or light background, and a sheet 1200, 1600 or 2400 pixels wide. The header with the video's name, length, picture size and file size can be switched off.
Not quite: a storyboard is drawn or planned before filming, while a contact sheet is made from a finished video. A contact sheet is useful for reviewing a video, finding a scene, or showing a client what is in a recording.
It is the small picture that stands for a video in a list, a gallery or a search result, usually a frame chosen because it is clear and interesting.
In File Explorer's folder options (the View tab), make sure Always show icons, never thumbnails is not ticked. Some video types need a codec before Windows can make the picture.
No. The picture is made in your browser on your own phone or computer, so the video never leaves your device.
MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI and WMV. If your browser can play the video it takes the pictures itself, and if not the page uses the media engine instead, for files up to 150 MB.
Add the video as a file from your device. A web page cannot read pictures out of a video that sits on another site, so for an online video, use the original file you have.
JPG for a smaller file, which is the usual choice for thumbnails, or PNG for the sharpest picture.
Open this page in Safari or Chrome, add the video from your phone and make the thumbnail or sheet; there is nothing to install.
A thumbnail takes a few seconds. A contact sheet takes about as long as the browser needs to jump to each of its pictures: in testing, eight pictures from a 30-second video took about 13 seconds, and a video with a keyframe every second or two is faster.
